Step 1: Flip open the enclosure lid.

Step 2: Set your M.2 SSD into the slot at a slight angle, lining up the notch with the connector, then press it flat. The pre-installed rubber plug holds it in place — no screw needed.

Step 3: Peel the film off the thermal pad, lay it on the drive, and flip the lid closed until it clicks.

Step 4: Plug the enclosure into your computer using the included USB cable (works with both USB-C and USB-A).

Step 5: Your drive appears in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) like any external drive. Open it and copy your files to a safe folder.

The enclosure connects M.2 drives that your computer can still detect over USB. If a drive is physically dead and can't be detected by any computer, no enclosure or adapter can bring it back — that requires a specialized data-recovery lab. If that turns out to be your situation, we'll refund your purchase and point you toward professional recovery options.

This depends on the MacBook. Older MacBooks (roughly 2013–2016) used proprietary SSDs that will not fit a standard M.2 enclosure. MacBooks with a T2 chip or Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) have SSDs soldered to the logic board, so they can't be removed at all. This enclosure works with standard M.2 SSDs — the kind found in most Windows laptops and some PC-compatible builds. If you're unsure about your drive, send us a photo and we'll tell you.

Yes — as long as the M.2 drive itself isn't encrypted with a separate password (like BitLocker on Windows or FileVault on Mac). Passwords that protect the computer's login don't affect the drive. Passwords that encrypt the drive contents do — you'd still need the encryption key to read the files.
